After sleepless night at Laban Rata Gunting Lagadan, we woke up at around 1.30am. We ate maggi and had some drinks.  It is quite unpractical to go to restaurant for supper even just 150m away. We needed to reserve our energy for the climb.

At 2.30 we started our climb. It was windy and cold. Face mask is ok but I did not wear it. I need more air into my lung. I just put on the hood from my jacket when the gust of wind came.

Glove is a must because of the cold and you need to hang on to the rope at some part and to pull you up at some steep area.

From Gunting Lagadan to Low peak just 2.6km but it took me more than 3 hours. Maybe we just waited a bit longer at the top before climbing to Low Peak so it would be less congested. We needed more time up there for pictures with all the sponsors’ banners.

Back to the title, why I say race?
You need to climb to the peak and go down back to the Gunting Lagadan to check out latest by 10.30am and take your breakfast also before 10.30am. No time to rest. Then descend to Timpohon Gate and hope the reach there before 4pm for lunch at Kinabalu Park. I wish I could spend more time at the top enjoying the scenery.

Another question – why start climbing at 2-3am in the morning. They said, the wind will be stronger when the sun rise. My answer, they want you to go up and down early and clear everything so that the next day climbers will take your place at Laban Rata.
